Market size and potential
Sumura targets a total Belgian market (TAM) of more than 2 million potential installations.
This market comprises more than 1 million private homes with a relevant e-bike user (±25% of all households) on the one hand, and ±250,000 professional locations, companies, apartments, schools, sports and hospitality areas on the other, where we can provide an average of three to five charging points per site.
Within that market, the achievable target group (SAM) accounts for approximately 350,000 devices, of which we realistically aim for approximately 3,000 devices per year in Belgium (SOM).
Why Belgium is the ideal launch market
Belgium, and Flanders in particular, is the ideal launch market: it combines very high bicycle usage, a rapidly growing e-bike market, and an extensive network of companies, project developers, and cities that are actively investing in sustainable mobility. What's more, Belgium is one of the most densely populated regions in Europe, with typical commuting distances of 5 to 30 km, perfect for e-bikes. Smarter charging infrastructure lowers the threshold for new commuters and encourages greater use among those who already cycle electrically: the easier it is to charge, the more often people choose the e-bike.
Evolution of bicycle sales in Belgium 2019–2023: e-bike vs non-e-bike
From 2027, organic growth in the Netherlands, followed by Germany and the rest of Europe by 2030.
From this solid foundation, Sumura can grow organically into the Netherlands in 2027 and then into Germany from 2028 onwards. The three markets not only share a similar language, culture, and mobility mindset, but also a distinct cycling culture: the Netherlands has about twice as many e-bikes as Belgium, and Germany has up to seven times more.
We estimate that by 2030, we will be able to roll out around 10,000 devices per year. This makes Sumura a scalable growth story: first validate in Belgium, then accelerate into larger European markets.

Market drivers
Demand for smart e-bike infrastructure is being accelerated by strong macro trends:
- Explosive growth in e-bike use (10–20% annually in BE/NL/DE)
- Employer investments (bike leasing, bike allowances)
- Sustainable mobility in cities (smart mobility plans, low-traffic zones)
- Need for security due to rising bicycle thefts
- Insurers requiring secure parking/battery charging facilities
- Project development: every new residential project must integrate additional bicycle facilities
- Regulation (EPB, mobility budget, bicycle standards for new projects)
E-bike usage has increased by 56% since 2021.
The use of electric bikes among under-35s has increased from 10% to 25%.
E-bikes account for 13% of purchase intentions within the next 2 years.

Market segments
Sumura serves several fast-growing segments within the e-bike market, each with a clear need for smart charging and locking solutions:
- Home use (B2C): safe and simple charging solutions for homes.
- Businesses (B2B): management, access, data, and secure charging spots for employees (bike leasing).
- Apartments & real estate: central, fire-safe, and managed solutions for shared bike parking, with automatic billing to residents/users so that property managers don't have to worry about a thing.
- Public & semi-public locations: cities, parking lots, and mobility hubs that want uniform, manageable charging points, with payments via app, credits, Apple, or Google Pay.
- Retail & bicycle shops: drop-off & pick-up, charging and lock stations outside opening hours for repairs, rentals, and service.

Competitive landscape
Our competitors in BE/NL/DE are:
1. "Dumb" infrastructure (95% of the market)
The largest category today, ordinary power outlets, basic charging points without any security. Problem: unsafe, chaotic, fire hazards, no control, no smart features.
2. Fireproof lockers/adapter lockers (highly priced, low usage)
Costs quickly add up to €8,000–€12,000 per locker, and they are hardly ever used anywhere.
3. Smart public locks (Bikeep, Locky Brussels)
Smart locking systems, strong in public spaces (cities/municipalities) but no charging function.
These are often very expensive devices in terms of investment.
4. Public charging point players (Econec, Ongineer, Bike Energy)
They focus on free public charging points, not on businesses, real estate, or homes, with no access control, payments, or data, and no integrated locking solution.
