SmartRunning is building an adaptive digital coach that helps recreational runners train consistently and stay active for longer. The company is raising €150,000 through Spreds as part of a broader financing plan to scale a working marathon product into a validated, multi-distance platform for runners and distribution partners.
A running plan that learns
Most training plans are still static, but runners are not. Sleep, stress, illness, missed sessions and the body's response to training can quickly make a fixed schedule unsuitable. SmartRunning turns wearable data, training history and personal context into one clear daily decision: continue, adjust or recover. The runner sees what to do next and why—without needing extra hardware or a personal coach.
The platform is designed for recreational runners who value enjoyment, consistency, and a lasting relationship with running. Its models combine personal progress with physiological rules and safety constraints, so an encouraging performance signal does not automatically override insufficient recovery or overly rapid progression.
Built from runner evidence
The product grew from two studies involving 2,992 runners. In the 2021 study, 59% of 2,304 marathon runners reported at least one injury. In the 2025 study, 70.8% of 688 runners considered daily adaptation for fatigue, sleep, and stress very important. Those findings shaped SmartRunning's approach: runners require practical, understandable guidance that adapts as their circumstances change.
From a working marathon product to a scalable platform
Today, SmartRunning already has a working version for marathon preparation. It can onboard runners, import wearable history, assess the runner's starting level, generate a personalized plan, present individual sessions and analyze completed runs. This demonstrates the core coaching cycle and provides the foundation for the next development phase.
The next step is a 24-month research and development program for which SmartRunning has requested €366,136 in VLAIO support. The capital raised through Spreds will help finance SmartRunning's own contribution to this program and the commercialization work required to bring the new version to market.
Building on the current product, the new version will strengthen data-quality controls, use more recovery and context signals, develop readiness and load-tolerance models, personalize decisions when data are incomplete or uncertain, and add controlled conversational coaching. It will also support shorter distances and year-round maintenance running.
SmartRunning remains a sport-performance and wellness tool; it does not diagnose injuries or replace medical care.
