Short summary

Every child deserves to get good at their sport. Beyond Sports builds the hybrid 3D mobile learning coach alongside the trainer. Five weeks after launching our first app Beyond the Mat on iOS and Android, even our most optimistic targets have been surpassed by a wide margin. That market validation is our signal to accelerate the addition of judo, football, and other sports alongside Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

From promise to proven traction

In our first two rounds on Spreds (€106,000 and €200,465), we shared a clear plan: we would build an interactive 3D sports app that lets athletes practice and test their techniques on their phone between training sessions.

Today there is no longer just a presentation, but a live product in the App Store and Google Play Store. Beyond the Mat went live in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom. On a modest marketing budget, the first numbers already beat our Best case scenario for year-end 2026:

During software development over the past year, we built the platform so new sports can be added with minimal friction. All gamification, the friends list, notifications, and side features are reusable, meaning adding a new sport requires only 25% to 35% new work. That allows Beyond Sports to scale much faster than originally planned: from Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) today to judo for children in Q2 2027 and football (Beyond the Pitch) in 2028. With this €150,000 round, the company is financing that accelerated development and the launch of judo.

The problem and our mission: the future of sports education is hybrid

The early success of Beyond Sports comes down to one core insight from recent months: complex combat sports are not the only ones that need support; across many other sports, education is far from ideal. In-depth research by Beyond Sports showed that physical group classes are too infrequent for many young athletes. Passing on solid technical knowledge in football, field hockey, or basketball still leaves plenty of room for improvement despite the dedication of volunteers and coaches. Conversations with people across sports education made it clear that they are very open to digital support. And just like Beyond Sports, they believe in a future where sports education is a hybrid of physical coaching and digital learning.

The findings from this research break down as follows:

  • 180 hours of training versus ~3,000 free hours without guidance: a child or athlete trains an average of three to four hours per week at their club (180 hours per year). That is followed by more than 3,000 free hours with nothing at home to engage with their sport in a playful, interactive way. By the next practice, much of the coach’s explanation has been forgotten.
  • 70% of sports coaches in Europe are volunteers: youth coaches are often committed parents who stepped up to help. Fewer than half of youth coaches in Europe hold a coaching certificate, and they simply lack the time and tools to correct every child individually.
  • Kids already learn through apps, except in their sport: every week 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT and 58.7 million people learn daily on Duolingo. Only in sports are young players outside practice still left with flat 2D videos on YouTube or TikTok, where key angles, grips, and body positions are hard to see and knowledge is never tested.

The coach during practice + the app between sessions = hybrid sports education.

Our mission with Beyond Sports is simple: put the coach’s lesson, in interactive 3D, in every child’s pocket. Alongside the coach, never replacing the coach.

For new investors: this is Beyond the Mat!

Beyond the Mat combines an in-house 3D learning platform with Duolingo’s daily microlearning approach. Athletes do not passively watch a video; they rotate the 3D fighters with their fingers on screen, inspect every technique from any angle, and answer interactive step-by-step questions.

The platform consists of five building blocks that together drive rapid learning progress and high daily retention:

1. The core loop

Every strong mobile learning product is built around a daily habit. In Beyond the Mat, each athlete follows a personalized learning path matched to their level, where every tile on the path is a short 5-to-10-minute 3D lesson and quiz. The athlete controls the camera angle in 360° and learns step by step where hands, feet, and weight belong.

2. The trainers

To make techniques clear and approachable for both kids and adults, a diverse cast of 3D characters was created by a character artist who previously worked for Disney and Studio 100. Each digital trainer guides the athlete through specific parts of the curriculum.

3. Gamification and rewards

Daily consistency is rewarded with streaks, experience points, Tapstars, and new belts or gear for the user’s 3D character. Completing a short daily lesson and showing up to physical club practice reinforce one another.

4. User account and friends

Every athlete builds their own 3D avatar and tracks their progress on a clean profile screen. Through the friends list, teammates learn together and follow each other’s progress, boosting motivation and member retention at sports clubs.

5. Tools for clubs and coaches

Coaches and clubs are our most important ambassadors. That is why Beyond the Mat offers free homework tools for clubs. After class, the coach sends the next 3D technique to their members as homework with a single click, so everyone arrives prepared for the next session.
